The Problem

Kalba.lt runs teacher-led language courses that meet a few times a week. Real fluency, though, is built between those lessons, and that's where most students fall off. Voluntary homework rarely gets done, skills fade between sessions, and the live classroom ends up re-teaching instead of moving forward.

The pressure landed on teachers. They were spending roughly 6 hours a week building supplementary exercises for different levels and groups, material that often went unused. One teacher, many students, no way to match practice to each learner's pace.

Without something that lived between the lessons, Kalba.lt was capped. Better outcomes meant more teacher hours, and more teacher hours meant a more expensive course that fewer students could afford.

Our Approach

We didn't want to replace the teacher. The teacher relationship is the reason students choose Kalba.lt in the first place. Our job was to extend it. A few decisions shaped the platform.

Position as a companion, not a replacement

KALBA Boost only works alongside a live course. It preserves the value of human instruction and gives Kalba.lt a clear product upsell instead of a cannibalising one.

Two practice modes that match how people actually learn

Live voice sessions with an AI partner for speaking confidence, plus chat-based lessons for grammar and vocabulary drills. Students pick the mode that fits the 10 minutes they have.

Adaptive AI content tied to CEFR levels

Weekly topics and grammar exercises are generated for each group's level (A1–C1), so beginners and advanced learners get material that actually matches their pace.

Teachers stay in control

Every AI-generated weekly plan lands in the teacher's dashboard for review and approval before students see it. AI does the heavy lifting. Teachers keep the editorial call.

What we built

A purpose-built web platform with role-based access for Super Admins, Teachers and Students, designed for daily use on phones, tablets and laptops.

The OpenAI API generates a structured weekly flow (topics, dialogues and grammar exercises) calibrated to each group's CEFR level (A1–C1). Teachers can review, edit or regenerate any item before it goes live, so the AI speeds them up without taking over.

Real-time AI practice (voice + chat)

Students practice with an AI partner through live voice sessions and chat-based lessons. WebSockets and Supabase Realtime keep latency low enough to feel like a real conversation, so students get immediate, judgment-free feedback whenever they're ready to practice.

Teachers see group activity, individual performance across speaking, writing and grammar, and weekly engagement at a glance. Students see their own progress, streaks and weak spots, so they know exactly what to practice next.
